DLOV Statement in Support of SB 783
The Democratic Latino Organization of Virginia supports SB 783, legislation that places clear limits on local law enforcement participation in federal civil immigration enforcement. This bill is important to protecting public safety, constitutional rights, and the dignity of immigrant and mixed-status families across the Commonwealth.
SB 783 reflects the principle that public safety works best when communities trust local institutions. When residents feel safe reporting crimes, cooperating with law enforcement, and engaging with local government, everyone benefits.
Why This Matters
Local participation in federal civil immigration enforcement has not been shown to reduce crime. Instead, it discourages people from reporting crimes, serving as witnesses, or seeking help when they need it most.
When fear replaces trust, public safety is weakened. Communities become less safe when residents worry that contact with local law enforcement could lead to detention or deportation.
Impact on Communities
Policies like 287(g) agreements disproportionately affect Latino and immigrant communities. The harm does not stop with individuals. It extends to families, workers, children, and faith communities, creating long-term fear and instability.
Public safety should protect communities, not intimidate them.
Our Position
DLOV urges the Virginia General Assembly to pass SB 783 and establish clear boundaries between local law enforcement and federal civil immigration enforcement.
This legislation aligns with Virginia’s values of dignity, constitutional rights, and trust-based public safety. We believe SB 783 is a necessary step toward safer, stronger communities for all Virginians.
